Journaling on external device

According to an article I read, it suggest that placing the journal on a separate partition increase performance. For example,

hda1 - Real disk
hda2 - journal.

I was wondering if this is true only if the partition is another disk? If they are different partitions on the same disk, will I see a performance improvement?

How do I calcuate how much journal space I need?

I could believe you might see a small increase but probably not noticeable from the naked eye or from your standpoint. However, a separate disk I would believe would give you an increase, but probably not that noticeable, only perhaps you were working with older hardware or this machine was used and abused.

I think you really need to have separate disk. The performance gain probably comes from eliminating the hard drive head movement from writing the data and writing the journal. If the data and journal were on separate devices, both can be written at the same time.
