Join Partitions Without losing data

Hello there:
I want to know if I can do the following without losing data.
I have /dev/hda8 as /files and /dev/hda9 for /home the order is due to some previous partitioning, I want to add /dev/hda8 to /dev/hda9 to enlarge the /home partition without losing data, can it be done?
Thanks in advance
