JAVA....OC://Webconnect applet won't download on FC5
 

Folks, I have FC5 newly installed. I find one vexing problem concerning JAVA. I set up JRE for each browser that I thought I'd use, specifically Firefox, Konqueror, and Mozilla. Most Java bearing sites work fine, but one does not. My company mainframe allows web access by using OC://Webconnect which is a java based 3270 emulator applet. When I click the button on the site to begin the process the browser will either dutifully say it's done, (but do nothing) or else, just freeze so solidly that I have to do a force kill, and of course the applet doesn't download. Since all three browsers exhibit this behavior I suspect my JRE is to blame. I am using JRE 1.5.0_9. My browsers are all the lastest issues except Firefox which is 1.5.08 or such. Ideas? Thanks.

Late update: Problem still exists in Suse 10.1. Appears to be a scripting issue. The button which is to be clicked does not appear to have it's underlying link. SO when clicked it does nothing since it has nothing to do. I used Knoppix 4 and 5 and this problem did not occur. Would like to open a Java Console but when broswer goes into it's loop and freezes you can't open any menus or do any key combinations to summon help. Is there a tool that runs outside of a broswer, that watches a Java script and shows me the results of each step as it is taken? Thus if a script hung I could see where it got hung up? Incidentally, if I open the main site and then do a "view source" I see no problems, every needed reference is there. It just seems Java scripting is not reading it to take the correct action.

It may be the source code for the java applet itself. Are you able to view the applet from any machines at all.. Do you know if anyone else at the company is having issues with the applet

I can view and use the applet from any Windows machine which has Java, and from any Knoppix 4 or 5 live session. I have not been able to make it work in Fedora Core 5 or Suse 10.1. I recently tried SeaMiuuonkey on Suse 10.1, and while it doesn't crash or loop endlessly it does fail to to grab the applet. A watch page is supposed to open, set itself in the lower right corner, do a Java test, and then download the applet, or else open it locally if you already have the current version. (It is a persistent applet.) The watch page simply keeps a watch on the applet, if the watch page is closed, the applet closes. This is some scheme to prevent getting the applet and hacking it for other 3270 sessions which one might wish to try. (Idea being being OC://Webconnect would far rather sell you a specially crafted applet, but that's another kettle of fish.) I checked some other threads, and it caught my eye that I might build java directly on my machine, and within my distro, and likewise for Firefox. I wonder if that has merit? Or is there some tweak I might do, short of finding a build it yerself tarball? As far as that goes I do have GCC+ and all the other tools handy for a buildup. I am not a programmer, but I can type "Make such and such" as well as anybody else.
