Unhappy Java Library Issue (RHEL)

I am required to install j2sdk1.4.2_05 as a prerequisite for Oracle Forms/Reports Services 10g on my Linux Red Hat server.
Looking under /user/java, I have 2 sub-directories called j2sdk1.4.2_05 and j2re1.4.2_05.

The required subdirectories already seem to be installed.
However, when typing the commands :

- which java
- java -version

I get a screen long output message.
I do not get a confirmation that my Java component is installed.
I included the Java installation path in the PATH variable located in the .bash_profile file.

1) How can I make sure my java component is installed properly ?

Screen long error message or output of help file? I installed it previously on fedora 4, but sorry don't have this at the moment.

have you tried java --help for a list of command options.
