java applet printing

I am using a Mozilla and opera to run a Java application which uses a applet to print , but it does not work on Linux. If run the same application on Windows I get a message the application is trying to access the printer and if I click yes it prints. On Linux I don't get the warning
message. I have tried on Suse and Ubuntu and the same problem. In the Java console I get the error "can not find default printer"
How do I get Java to see the default printer?
