Well I got my new notebook and installed kubuntu and it went great, But I'm not keeping it on this hp. My Dell has Debian on it but I have requested a refund so if I'm lucky I'll be able to get a new one. I'll definitely keep debian and I'm thinking of trying gentoo. I know that'll be a challenge but that's what I want. I am going to try arch on my thinkpad so I think I'm going to try slackware on this notebook.

Hey again bsth123 ...

Don't know if you've already sent this computer back ...

I don't see anything that would make it linux-incompatible (not sure I've ever seen that).

The storage (32GB SSD) is limited, but if you can insert an SDXC card, or use some other storage solution (network, external storage ...) to your satisfaction, it could be OK.

For booting USB, just check the usual UEFI vs BIOS stuff and make sure your bootable USB is created according to the machine's architecture. Also make sure to disable secure boot, if that is present and enabled ... Other than those things, you should be able to boot USB.

Cheers !

I already sent it back because no matter what I tried I couldn't get it to boot from usb. I spent a whole day researching and trying everything I could with it but no luck. I wound up getting another hp with two 2.0 usb ports and I already had an optical drive. I installed kubuntu on it and it worked like a charm.

You say that you've never seen a computer that wasn't compatible. I may be able to get a refund on my new dell that had all kinds of hardware problems. Several people have told me to buy one with linux already installed but they're more expensive and I'm confident about doing my own installs since I have been doing them. My main requirement is that it has to have a touchscreen. Any suggestions?

Hey bsth123,

I currently dual-boot Windows 10 and Arch Linux on a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 - been using it that way for the last 18 months or so. Everything works as expected under linux with the exception of multitouch on the keyboard touchpad (kernel 4.11 is rumoured to address this ... in the meantime, it can be patched ..).

The other system with a touch screen I have used in the past was a HP TouchSmart (circa 2010 ...) - I had success with both Ubuntu and Arch on that one.

Cheers !

I just can't warrant spending more money on another laptop. I hope once the harddware issues are resolved I'll have better luck with it. thanks for the input.
some broadcom firmware is non distributable and may not be in any distro
I have a dell with such a wifi apter I had to install fwcutter download the windoze
driver run fwcutter on it and install the firmware
so what you need to do is
google for "your wifi adpters name and exact complete model number" with linux at the end of the string
you might want to check the wifi switch on my dell the switch was off bu the wifi
still worked under windows
