is there anyone who gets character codings?

I have recently installed OSD plugin for gaim.
I installed for both my PC and my laptop. But only my laptop version can handle non-standard (accented, ISO8859-#) characters.
(just to clear things: gaim handles characters nicely, but on my PC gaimosd (& gaimnosd) does not, however on the very same machine licq-osd works like a fairy, and uses the same xosd)

They both have the same:
FC4 OS
Xorg compiled snapshot
gcc
gaim compiled sourcecode (message encoding both set to ISO8859-2)
xosd version
/etc/sysconfig/i18n settings
font-* packages
They have different kernels tho (2.6.11 and 2.6.13(compiled)).

I don't get why is it working on one machine and not on the other. Btw I also don't get why some fonts can't display accented chars, and others can, even if the font is an MS font, that has the proper characters in it.

What (mis)setting can cause that difference? I don't find anything useful by googling for "character coding"...

thanks guys

Unhappy

yeah well, at least not im the only one who's not really understanding these things. but it's kinda frustrating that the left part of the globe believes that the world consists of 24 letters.
