that's a pretty poor question don't you think?? totally depends what the rulebase is on the firewall as to waht's permitted...

Yes, just walk right behind the firewall. You have now gotten around the hardware firewall.

Are you talking about getting around it from the inside or outside?

Questions like these make me cringe (I work in a place where caution is necessary). Therefore, I tend to think suspiciously when they are asked ...

I've said this before in other threads. There's a reason that firewall is there. You'd better talk to the network admins before trying to get around it. Many schools and workplaces have strict policies against circumvention, and you could land right out the door. Of course, then you wouldn't need to worry about that firewall any more, would you?

However, since you mentioned proxies, I'm guessing you're trying to get out. So, proxies won't work, you say? Why not? Many proxies work over port 80 (http), so unless 80 is blocked at the firewall, or they've got a filter like NetNanny that filters based on a list of known proxies, you should be able to use a proxy. Firewalls can't tell simply by the packets that you're going to a proxy.

With that, use the information as you desire, but I take no responsibility.

don't worry it's not at a public place,
at home we have two computers which we've networked
we have a hardware firewall and i can get into a proxy site but when i type in the web address it's blocked, i think it's blocking eveything with that word in it... it's ok it's nothing bad, i just want to get into youtube and listen to sum music while i'm on the net... so the problem is everytime i type the word youtube, it says it's being blocked by the firewall...

so you just have no idea how to use a firewall you yourself own?? there'is no way to get around a firewall all the time it is doing the job that it is degined to do. if there was, do you really think that they would exist?

Yeah, I'm having problems logicking it out, too.

If it's at home, and owned by you, read the firewall's instructions, and disable the rule or remove "youtube" from the blocklist.

If it's not at home, and/or it doesn't belong to you, then, again, there's a reason for the block. Talk to your admins.

Can you give us the name and brand of the firewall? I can't think of any home hardware routers/firewalls that actually block based on content.

Is this something your parents installed to filter your internet activities by chance?

the firewall is 'netgear'... and it was my dad that blocked youtube... i was just wondering if there is anyway to get around it without going 2 the huge trouble of convincing my dad 2 unblock it (trust me that would b harder than finding out this way!) he has a password to get into what the firewall blocks... i was surprised to find i couldn't even get around it with a proxy because this works with software firwalls... but i think he's blocked everything with the word 'youtube' in it, even if i search youtube thru google it blocks it... but i can search 'you tube' (with a space) but when i click on one of the results it will block that...

And ... now we have the truth!

I recommend you reread my last post in this thread. Your dad put it there for a reason.

He did and LQ is most definitely against creating family arguments. As your "family sysadmin" put it in place, I think we are pretty much out of this. Have a talk with your dad to find out *why* he needs Youtube blocking and try to convince him to unblock it.

Good luck. Thread closed.
