Is there any free text mode app like kppp?

Is there any free text mode app like kppp? 'pppd' doesn't work for me. 'minicom' doesn't either. The reason is that when kppp dials up the ISP number, it starts 'pppd'. But this 'pppd' "dies". And 'kppp' works somehow (it seems to me this way) without 'pppd'. But 'minicom' can't do that. It dials up, connects. Then I enter username and password. That's all. It tells me: "NO CARRIER". So is there anything for me?
Thanks.

Under CLI (in a terminal), try pppsetup. You may need to be root.

When done, use ppp-go to dial-in and ppp-off to hangup.

After using pppsetup, I had to set /usr/sbin/pppd to SUID, create links in /usr/bin to /usr/sbin/ppp-go and /usr/sbin/ppp-off, and change permissions of /etc/ppp/pppscript to 744. That to let normal user to use ppp-go. If you connect as root, none of the changes are necessary.
