Is there a way to see shutdown messages?

Is there a way to see the last shutdown or reboot messages?
I reboot and there were a whole bunch of numbers and letters flying by on the screen as soon as I pressed reboot from kdm that have never been there before and that session firefox locked up and I could not start it or mozilla. I ran rkhunter but it found nothing. Thanks.

I found that bunch of rubbish I was looking for in syslog with todays date. I dont want to post it because it has Ip addresses and mac addresses but its a bunch of stuff I have never seen at boot before, something like " kernel: DROPPED IN= OUT=eth0 " and then all kinds of numbers and stuff. Thanks.

So you're box is not secure?

On a serious note, kernel, dropped, in, out, eth0, ip, mac; sounds like you're modems log files. In packets and dropped packets from your eht0 (ethernet), etc.
