Is there a way to change background color out of X?

Hi. I use just the plain ol' black screen (without being in X) most of the time for programming in vim etc. Was just wondering if there's a way to change the background from black to another color while OUT OF x-windows. I know the text can display in color but wasn't sure if the black background was just unlit area of the screen.

There are several ways to do it. You can do it by echoing Esc codes to the terminal. But the easiest way is probably to use tput. You could do something like:

tput setb 1 && clear

If that doesn't work then you could try something like:

echo "^[[0;34;43m" && clear

The ^[ should be one character not two. You should type it in by keeping the CTRL key pressed and the pressing v and then [.
