Is there a way round the 2gb File size Limit

I was wondering if there was anyway round the really annoying 2gb file size limit in linux. I am using Redhat 7.0 with the 2.2.18 kernel and ext2 file system, as a server and samba to interface with my XP workstation.

I have read that the 2.4 kernels have LFS (Large File Support). But i cant find any decent info on how it works and installs (Not very clever with file systems).

I was also wondering if it would be easy to compile NTFS in my 2.2 kernel and create a partition using NTFS. As NTFS seems to allow me to create the files sizes in need.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

AFAIK the ext2 file system that comes wtih 2.4 supports 4gig files. If you care to use a patched kernel and switch your file systems to XFS I think the upper limit is measured in Terrabytes.

Linux write support for NTFS is considered "dangerous and will probably trash your data" so that wouldn't be a good approach.
