is there a true "upgrade" to go from RH Ent 2 to RH Ent 4??

Have only installed Linux on new machines. What is the procedure for upgrading an existion RH ES 2 or 3 install to ES 4 or 5? Is there even a true "upgrade" path or is a fresh install required?

Any ideas?

You really should make a working tested backup first and it is best to do a clean install since your changing kernel versions (2.4 to 2.6) , but it is possible (with some of extra work afterwards) to use the upgradeany option;

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/e...-bootopts.html

This applies for either RHEL4 or 5

Thanks for the reply...

In your experience, how well does "linux upgradeany" work? And what do you mean by "extra work afterwords"?

The upgradeany works fairly well but there is always some cleanup work to do, old packages no longer needed and/or and such.

The extra work afterwards depends mostly on customizations and third party packages and/or applications that are not part of the standard packages for RHEL. It is best if possible to remove (temporarily) all third party packages and applications then install the updated versions where appropriate.

OK - I always prefer fresh installs, but that may not be possible in this case.

Thanks for the advice - I appreciate it.
