Is it possible to use python scripts to run a dzen2 status bar?

I've used a bash script to display the time and battery level with dzen2. I wanted to try and use a python script with dzen2 because I'm much more proficient with python. However, when I try to launch it with
Code:
python myscript.py | dzen2
, i see the top of the screen get black like dzen2 is starting, but nothing ever shows up. I even wrote a program like
Code:
while 1:
   print "hello world"
to see if it was just a code error. It still didn't work.
Does python mix with dzen or is it a lost cause?
