Is it Possible to boot from an extended partitoin??

If you have no primary partitions, and have only a logical partition
in extended partition (i.e /dev/hda5), is it possible to boot from it?
(of course, assuming it lies within 1024 cylinder limit).

I plan to make that partition active, and install LILO in there.

I am no expert but I recall reading that lilo can now do just what you're asking. Older versions could not.

Have you also considered using GRUB instead of lilo?

Booting from an extended partition is not a problem and the more recent versions of Lilo are not bound by the old 1024 cylinder limit.

You can boot lilo from any partition you care to. The following URL will be of great help if you want to understand what lilo does.
