Is it an ATHLON, or ATHLON-THUNDERBIRD ?

as far as i know... my CPU was just a plain old Athlon.
but i noticed somthing in mplayer (when i compiled it from source)

mplayer printed my CPU as an Athlon thunderbird.

now im installing Gentoo from source, i need to know what i have for correct optimisations.

my /proc/cpuinfo doesnt say anything about thunderbird.
but from what ive reead, a thunderbird has more cach than a plain athlon. and my cpu does have the same amount of L2 as the thunderbird is descriped... anyways, how do i find out ?

here is my cpuinfo

Code:

Take a look at the output of DMESG for a section like this:
Code:
CPU: L1 I Cache: 64K (64 bytes/line), D cache 64K (64 bytes/line)
CPU: L2 Cache: 512K (64 bytes/line)
CPU: After generic, caps: 0383fbff c1c3fbff 00000000 00000000
CPU: Common caps: 0383fbff c1c3fbff 00000000 00000000
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2500+ stepping 00

knoppix@ttyp1[knoppix]$ dmesg | grep CPU
Initializing CPU#0
CPU: L1 I Cache: 64K (64 bytes/line), D cache 64K (64 bytes/line)
CPU: L2 Cache: 256K (64 bytes/line)
CPU: After generic, caps: 0183fbff c1c7fbff 00000000 00000000
CPU: Common caps: 0183fbff c1c7fbff 00000000 00000000
CPU: L1 I Cache: 64K (64 bytes/line), D cache 64K (64 bytes/line)
CPU: L2 Cache: 256K (64 bytes/line)
CPU: After generic, caps: 0183fbff c1c7fbff 00000000 00000000
CPU: Common caps: 0183fbff c1c7fbff 00000000 00000000
CPU0: AMD Athlon(tm) Processor stepping 04
per-CPU timeslice cutoff: 731.48 usecs.
enabled ExtINT on CPU#0
..... CPU clock speed is 1327.7792 MHz.
CPU0<T0:2655552,T1:1327760,D:13,S:1327779,C:2655558>

Doublechecked my machines and my cpuinfo is identical to yours for my poor plain ol' Athalon (pre XP, runs hot as hell). My other machine reports that cpu as an Athalon XP.

BTW, both machines report 256K caches and the Athalon is a 'model 4' too. I'd forget about the T-bird.
