There are many other types of IRC servers, though. I personally set up a hybrid6 server with hybserv services (nickserv, chanserv, etc.).

I myself run a combo of UltimateIRCD and a hacked version of Epona. I'm pretty happy with it. Hands down, Epona is THE irc services to use. They also work with UnrealIRCD, another very popular one.
