IP in rhosts not working

hi all,

I have spent a furious evening trying to get rsh, rlogin to work on my RH7.1. I followed all the instructions on setting the ~/.rhosts setting the permission to 0600 blah blah blah. However as i haven't got a DNS working, i simply placed the client IP address in the rhosts rather than the name, since the client doesn't have a name assigned.

192.168.1.100 john <----- not working

windoz1 john <----- working

Does linux like that? No freakkkin way! It keep complaining about permission denied ..

Once i allowed the name to be resolved by placing a entry into the /etc/hosts and then using the name in the ~/.rhosts rather than the IP everything works!

My question is. Is the rsh/rlogin trying to do a reverse lookup or something and fails if it can't?

any help appreciated.

I mean that exceed6.0 for win32 only supports rsh/rexec login method.

If you have any suggestions of a win32 xclient ( besides KDE which seems to be very resourse hungry ) then i am listening.

thanks
