IP Address Limitation on one interface?


Hi everyone a quick question my boss asked me
how many ip address can a network card have

No, a network card can have multiple IP addresses just fine if you use aliases.
eth0, eth0:0, eth0:1, eth0:2,...
Exactly how many of them you can create I don't know. It used to be 256 around Linux 2.0.XX Then, there was /proc/sys/net/core/net_aliax_max, but now I don't find it anymore...

Heres an example using Debian..

other distros can do the same thing albeit differently depending on how their configuration files are setup.. Redhat for instance uses a separate file for each subinterface.

And I've never even thought about a limit.. guess I never had a need to add that many addresses to a single interface.

How ever many you want. I've dealt with machines with over 600 at one time. I don't believe there is a limit any longer.

The most I have tried is a /24 worth. No problems there.

Sorry To be push but wont the ip address be conflicting if you use up all the ip addresses

What do you mean by "use up all the ip addresses"?
