Internet won't work

Ok now that my computer can find my modem why can't connect to the internet. It keeps giving me an error like PP07 couldn't do something(note this isn't specific). Please help i'm new to linux and i'm fed up with windows.

Try dmesg|grep pppd
or
grep pppd /var/log/messages

And post any messages you feel are important.

From an xterm, type in those commands and see if you get any information about why it isn't working.

The command grep pppd /var/log/messages requires root permissions to do that.

What will that exactly do and why how will it help me? Also how do go about doing it?
