Internet problem, Any ideas ???

I just installed Mandrake 8.1 the other day but I cant connect to the internet.
There is no problem with my modem as it worked with Mandrake 7.2 & 8.0.
Its an external modem & I can connect to my ISP but in netscape it says looking for
host http://whatever.com & gives me an error a minute or two later saying it cant find the host.
I tried it with the KDE browser aswell but that didnt work either.
I tried to ping a few sites but ping done nothing & I had to press CTRL+C to bring me back to the prompt after a minute of looking at ping not responding yet my modem shows as responding.
I went into modem properties & watched packets being sent & recieved.
Pleeezzzzzz help so I can get out of windows & boot into Linux & surf this forum in netscape :D
Any ideas anyone ??

Thanks in advance

when you pinged a few sites.. did you do it by name or by IP.. if by name.. try pinging a IP address.. you can try like yahoo which is 216.115.108.243 and see if that resolves anything for you.

I am now writing this in netscape

I tried ping but that didnt work either so I knew I must have fu**ed up when I was configuring network options during the install.
I had myself running as a host name server ( i think )
It's all sorted now & I think I might be doing away with windows very soon

Thanks for your help trickykid & thanks to rshaw fro helping me on the sound/volume problem I had earlier with playing CD's.

Correct me if im wrong but yahoo does not allow pings using some firewall stealth script.
