Internet Explorer supported website (not supported by FF)

What shall I do to watch and use a website from linux that doesn't support FF?

Is there any option?

nadroj 03-21-2006 03:09 PM

all html files are supported by all browsers.. its the media content that would vary from browser to browser.

you mentioned 'watch'.. i assume its a video clip? is it maybe a windows media clip? whats the link to this site to see if others can view it and you can talk to them. or at least what is the media your trying to view/explore?

itz2000 03-21-2006 03:53 PM

No... I talk about applications supported by Explorer only...

It's probably due to the site using scripts which are not W3C Scripts, but supported by Explorer.

The website is Orange.co.il (send SMS pages, etc...)

Look into Wine (http://www.winehq.org) Last time i installed it (with the auto install tool thing) it had a specific feature for installing Internet Explorer, maybe that would help

pixellany 03-21-2006 06:36 PM

The thought of installing WINE so that I can then install IE on Linux just makes my head spin. On my machine, this will NEVER happen.

There are several options:
First, I have successfully contacted two sites that did not work with FF---they fixed it.

Second, you can configure FF to "pretend" that it is IE. Here's one of many hits using "useragent spoofing" in Google.

To see settings in FF, type "about:config" in the URL dialog, then filter on useragent

That's only to fool some sites verifications i think, if it actually requires a functionality of IE then changing the useragent string won't work.

That being said contacting the site is a great idea, a few years back i wouldn't have thought it possible days but this day and age, with other browsers gaining market share, go for it :) especially if you pay them

tamoneya 03-21-2006 08:11 PM

there is a FF extension called IEView that lets you view pages as if they were in IE. That might work a bit better than the spoofing

itz2000 03-22-2006 11:21 AM

<tamoneya : IEview open pages in IE if you're on WINDOWS! or am I wrong?
it's not really view in FF like it would have been in IE, but it's just open in new window the site in Explorer, which I don't have (linux, duh).>

<Surfing in IE through Wine? out of question! I don't want to use it with all the bugs etc...>

<Contacting them? I've contacted them yesterday, explaind 3 customer service people what the problem is then they asked what is firefox...lol!, after I got into the right customer service person, they answered me that they don't support firefox ATM and the aren't plans to fix it in the near future (but it might be done in the late future)... Got disappointed :( >

<it's not about useragent, it's about functionality offcourse.>

Is there any other browser in Open Source, which acts like I.E?

EDIT : here's a direct example!
http://www.orange.co.il/web/obox/PassRequest.aspx

when you see the form with the 054- in BOLD, there is supposed to be a sumbit button, which doesn't exsist in FF, while it does exsist in I.E.

I will try to get SS from both soon.

don't think so, you're out of luck, blame MS and the web developer, wine isn't that bad....

jlo_sandog 03-22-2006 08:01 PM

oh forget about all these ms haters. Probably can't find themselves out of a wet paperbag.

If you need IE, then I suggest you try ies4linux. Your website migth only need activex and not necessarily IE. If that's the case then try the windows version of firefox with wine.

I pay bills on the net. Occasionally, I encounter a site that won't accept my payment. I always call to make the payment by phone and tell the nice customer service person to please register my complaint. The next month when it doesn't work again, I repeat the process, asking them to please check my history to be sure it shows that I complained both last month and this month.

Over a couple years, the problem no longer exists. I'm sure they didn't fix it especially for me, but written complaints naturally float to the top, and it doesn't take too many to generate some action.

Bloody bloody bloody...that spoils my weekend.
True. Been trying all the options mentioned...didn't bring me anywhere.
IE can only be installed online thru Wine -- goes wrong immediately.
If there was an option to download IE and then unpack and install, then I might give Wine another chance...

craigevil 03-24-2006 12:32 PM

Try using wine along with winetools. It installs IE 6 with no problems. Depending on the distro you are using both wine and winetools is probably available via your package manager.

Or if your not a big MS hater you could install Vmplayer and install windows in a virtual drive and run IE from there.

But that's too much work to view one site!

I can also restart my computer to boot from XP, but why should I do that, only to view one site? what happens if I don't use multi boot? etc...

I will eventually run IE through Wine I think, but it shouldn't be that way guys! we should fight for every site to work in W3C standarts! LQ can make a good example here!

Then do as suggested above, file your complaint and vote with your cash. take your business elsewhere. if they are too stubborn to support web standards with their site there are plenty of other companies out there that will.

I do my banking online, pay insurance and Credit Card bills etc.. and all of those sites work fine with firefox in Linux. (with the NoScript extension blocking scripting no less) I was rather impressed that these companies had made the sites friendly enough that no scripting was required and they all work flawlessly in Firefox on Linux.

When the Bank CEO cleared 5.6 MILLION dollars last year in compensation (was mentioned in the paper last week) he damn well better be able to pay some poor shlub programmer to make a website function properly in a standards compliant browser.

Either bite the bullet and accept it and use Win/IE or move on to a company that is willing to provide proper support. I vote for moving on..
