international characters in linux preventing me from accessing files

i've just recently installed slack 9.1 (after trying out others like MDK, RH, Debian)...but i stumbled upon a problem that i only encountered with slack.

i have some music files with chinese characters in them, and folders too. and slack is unable to access them. it doesn't show them at all. what do i need to install/configure to get slack to recognize these characters and allow me to access the files/folders?

thanx

Tell me more. How did you do this and did you lose any data? I have some mp3's and they have Japanese characters in them and they don't show up in Mandrake 9.1. I guess I could go into my windows and rename them to english texts, but I can't read japanese so I wouldn't know what to call them!
