Internal US Robotics modem and Linux

Hi all, I am trying to determine the nature of my modem (hardware or software), because I know if it's hardware then I could possibly use this modem with Linux.

Okay so this is what the output from "lspci -v" gets me:

Code:
0000:00:09.0 Serial controller: 5610 56K FaxModem 56K FaxModem Model 5610 (rev 01) (prog-if 02 [16550])
Subsystem: 5610 56K FaxModem USR 56k Internal Voice Modem (Model 2976)
        Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 169
        I/O ports at d000 [size=8]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2
None of the other modems (winmodems) I have used said anything about "serial controller" or that kind of stuff. If this does happen to be a hardware modem, could someone tell me how to get it working?

Okay, I think I've got it! I got the setserial package which configured my modem to a serial port automatically. I got it to dial out, but it died because, according to the pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so."
So I'm about to try "noauth" as a pppd argument in kppp. So here I go rebooting again. I'll sure be happy if I can get an internet connection in Linux, as I then will have no need to use the, uh, , , , other OS.

modem

Haven't used dial up in a while, but if I remember, the 5610 is linux compatible with the correct drivers as you have found out.

As far as authentication, certain ISP ARE NOT linux friendly. Check with them to verify.

good luck

Okay, everything working now. It's dialing and staying connected. Now I just have to get rid of the paid-for-spyware they call "NetZero" (please, stay far away from this trojan ISP), and I'll be all set. So far I can only get to pages on the netzero site, and their software for Linux works about as well as an underwater hairdrier. I'll be switching to something cheaper, faster, and without spyware tomorrow, but I will be sure to check with them for Linux compatibility (thanks Trio3b for the tip).
