Intermittent system failure at boot, don't know where to start looking

Hi,

I have a problem with my Kanotix laptop. It has started (intermittently) to crash on bootup, and I don't know where the problem is.

When it happens, several boot steps return "failed" and then the system times out on the following:

Code:
Setting up general console font...get_console_fd: inappropriate ioctl for device
I would really appreciate one of you experts having a look at my syslog and hopefully giving me some ideas on what might be going wrong.

Thanks so much in advance.

Rollo

From syslog:

WHat hapens when you try booting with a different kernel? Select one in the grub or LILO menu.

Thanks for the reply.

I was afraid the word "kernel" would come up. My normal relationship with Linux goes like this:
  1. Upgrade distro to make some piece of hardware/software work
  2. Struggle for [insert #] weeks to get everything functioning correctly
  3. Get told that a kernel upgrade is in order
  4. Repeat process (coz of problems with kernel upgrade)

So I was hoping that kernel diagnostics could be avoided here (I don't have a alternative kernel currently installed).

Perhaps the log of the screen output at boot would be useful. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be one under /var/log.

Any ideas about how to activate a screen output bootlog?

There is one problem. Are you having disk problems? Run fsck. (man fsck) If your drive is getting old, you can get another one.
