Have you ever installed any software on Linux before?
Which version did you download the "rpm" or the ".tar.gz"?
I would suggest (only for simplicity) the RPM version, if you don't have it, try to get it instead. Look for one that is made for your distro.
You can save it anywhere you'd like, I suggest making a directory to put all your downloads in. Mine is /home/downloads/ But you can put it wherever you'd like.
Once it's saved, you have several options. The more "universal" option is to open a console and "cd ( type cd /home/downloads)" to the directory where you downloaded it to. Then make sure you have the right directory, type ls and it should appear. If you have alot of files in this directory you may want to use a command ls|less to produce less results which you can scroll through.
Once you have verified you are in the correct directory type 'rpm -i <package name>.rpm' without the quotes and with the package name in place of the <package name>.
This will (assuming you have met all depencies) install the package into (probably) /usr/bin
You can then simply open a cosole and type xine and it will open the xine player (you do have to be in X when doing this).
Please, anybody clear up any confusion, or mistakes I have made. Thanks!
