When you select 'Install VMware tools' from the VMware menu (physically on VMware, not inside your guest OS), you should have a CD mounted in your VM. You'll need to be out of X in order to install this, so quickly copy the contents of that 'CD' to some virtual harddrive folder and in a terminal type 'init 3' (you may need to be root). From there untar the copied packaged and do your thing (I believe it's ./install-vmware-tools)

wheres it mounted?

I'm a Suse user so I can't really give you a specific answer. Typically under /mnt/cdrom or on Suse it's /media/cdrom. Just look under /mnt or /media and take a wild guess, it'll be pretty obvious.

Good stuff! During my VMWare 5.5.2, after you click "Install VMWare tools", you must manually:
mount /mnt/cdrom
