Installing Ubuntu on windows machine please HELP

Hello, Im very new. I looked for this information before i posted. If I missed it Im sorry. Can I install this OS with XP already on my machine? Will it install right on top of XP? I am not interested in dual boot or keeping windows on my machine in any way. The computer is an HP Pavilion dv8000. Thank you. Steve

As long as you have a partition with free space available, you can have both on your computer. In fact you can have as many Linux distros as you wish as long as each has a partition available.

If you don't want to keep XP around, just run the Ubuntu installer. It will probably warn you
that you will lose all data on the partition, but that's ok in this case. If you do want to
keep windows around, you can either shrink your windows partition with something like Qparted or Partition Magic, and install Ubuntu on the second partition, or install Vmware on Windows
and run Ubuntu inside it on top of XP.
