installing the SOURCE of a kernel

Can someone tell me how to install the source of the kernel correctly? Right now I have the source in /usr/src/linux-2.4.19 and a symbolic link to linux. But what should I do with /usr/include ?

What i do in slack is just extraxt the source to /usr/src/linux-version and symlink it to /usr/src/linux then compile the new kernel and install it. Never had problems...
