Question Installing new Version of K3b

Hi all (and trickykid in particular ),

I use SuSE 8.1 which comes with K3b 0.7 in a somewhat mangled form. So I downloaded K3b 0.8 and then used ./configure (installing by that way two further necessary things), make, and make install (everything as root). No errors shown.

KDE still uses K3b 0.7. Now what did I leave out?

(btw. I can start K3b manually, but it is still mangled -> no 5th step of the assistant to set rights for users other than root etc.)

Anybody any ideas?

you obvously haven't removed the old one. you should always remove existing software before reinstalling a new version. you will probably have one version in /usr/local/bin and he otehr one in /usr/bin. you should use suse package manager to remove the old one.

If you want to install from source make sure you uninstall it first
rpm -e k3b

I use rpms for better package management in SuSE linux.
I use k3b-0.8.1 on my SuSE 8.1 with great success.

Search it here:
http://rpm.pbone.net
www.rpmseek.com

If you download the package in rpm format you can just
rpm -Uvh k3b*.rpm

If you install apt for SuSE do
apt-get update
apt-get install k3b
It will install the latest k3b and other rpms automatically if needed.

Have a lot of fun :-)

Oops, don't forget to run this on your ./configure dir as root:

make uninstall

If you install the downloaded rpm from console don't forget to run:

SuSEconfig

To make it accessible out of the bat ;-)

Have a lot more fun :-)

Hi all and good morning

Yes, thats been it. After uninstalling I could install the new version K3b-0.8 - thank you all.

(Added Value-Joke: The new version doesn't work, because it lacks most of the buttons, including the one for burning, and the assistant doesn't do its tricks either, like installing users ...).

@ aherm:
I take it, "make uninstall" has to be used after "make" and before "make install"?

Thanks for reminding me of SuSEconfig, perhaps that is the nemesis which still hamstrings my new version. I will tell you on monday. Bye until then.

The END:

Good morning, all.

Regrettably SuSEconfig did not work for my K3b-Problem. I will dig some more in my computer's intestines and start a new thread with an appropriate Header (Teaser?) when/if I cant solve that riddle.

Your help here is greatly appreciated. Thanks again, everybody.
