installing new kernel??

I have these directories in the CentOS 4.3 full.with kernel 2.6.9
I want install new kernel 2.6.17.11
I read instruction for that,but I cant undrestand where I do it.
so I describe some directories in my system:

/usr/src: kernels(folder),redhat(folder)

/usr/src/redhat : build,rpms,srmps,specs,sources(all of them are empty folder)

/usr/src/kernels: 2.6.9-34.EL-hugemem-i686 **** 2.6.9-34.EL-i686 **** 2.6.9-34.EL-smp-i686***(all of them are folder and have several files.and all of them have in their subdirectory: /include/linux several files(full path is /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-34.EL-smp-i686/include/linux).

and I have another linux directory at the /usr/include.and it has several files.

now I dont know where I should extract my new full source kernel 2.6.17.11
and I dont know that I linked the extracted folder(new kernel) to where??????
please guide me.

Place the kernel-2.6.17.11 tar file in the /usr/src directory (this is the textbook location to start with). From this location (/usr/src) extract the kernel source (use one of the commands depending the tar file type downloaded);

tar xfvj linux-2.6.17.11.tar.bz2
tar xfvz linux-2.6.17.11.tar.gz

After the tar file is extracted you should now have a new directory named linux-2.6.17.11. Change into this directory;

cd linux-2.6.17.11

Now you can start the kernel configuration process, the steps to build a kernel for the Red Hat family are in order;

make mrproper
make menuconfig
make
make modules_install
make install

The 'make menuconfig' step will take time to complete as the default configuration does not work. The Red Hat configuration files do not work either due to all the changes Red Hat makes to the kernels (and source) they supply. And yes this does differ from the kernel rebuild guide a bit, but they are what is needed and they do work.

Here's a link to the Kernel Rebuild Guide it is a good idea to review it and maybe have it handy for reference/help/additional details and information about building kernels;
