Question installing kde3.1

hi all

can anyone explain the method for installing Kde3.1 on RedHat 8.0? from both the source and/or rpm package.

i've attempted the installation myself but i seem to be going round in a never ending circle. the installation process tells me i need a higher version of Qt, so i try to install this only to be told i need to install kde3.1 !!!!!????

cheers

uh? I never heard of Qt depending on KDE, it should be the other way around. Are you compiling as root?
I think the newest version of Qt does come with RH8.0, so you might be able to install it from your cds.

hi

yep, compiling source and trying to install rpm from root.

i'm getting dependancy errors! i've noted from lots of posts (not just this site) that other ppl are experiencing same probs. i've even tried other ppl suggestions, but still i get same probs everytime.

i'm still new to linux/redhat but i'm near to the point of giving up all hope and reverting back to windoze (as much as i hate ms @ least 99.9% of time software installation goes without a hitch and i can get on with work).

cheers

Very easy.

Install qt rpm passing the --nodeps option.
If it doesn't work try --nodeps --force:

rpm -i qt-3.1.2-0.8x.1.i386.rpm --nodeps --force

Then you'll be able to install KDE 3.1

First of all, I'll recomend to remove all RedHat packages beginning with kde.... & qt.....

Get the list:

rpm -qa|grep kde
rpm -qa|grep qt

erase then (one by one)

rpm -e kdebase-3.0.....
....
...

I downloaded the RPMs from kde.org It comes with an updated QT package. This has to be installed before KDE. I had to remove 2 conflicting RPMs, but after that, all the RPMs installed. After installing QT, then KDELIBS, & KDEBASE. I believe you can just install them in ascending order after that. I also used the update function "rpm -Uvh _package_name_". Hope this works for you too.

hi

well what a w/end i had trying to install kde3.1!
tried the suggestions but to no avail.

i even tried doing a fresh install of a RH8 on a workstation without KDE & related apps/tools on the belief that if there's no previous installation, the install of KDE3.1 should be a breeze.

how wrong i was. i still had dependancy errors

has anyone sucessfully installed KDE3.1 on RH8, and if so what is the exact procedure and are there any other configuring i need to perform?

cheers

Maybe you should be more brave & ignore the dependency errors, using:

rpm -i package_file --nodeps
rpm -e package_name --nodeps --force

I did, and it worked ok.

Note: I'm using binaries from SourceForge, as they appeared before kde.org ones.

If there is a previous version of the package installed use "rpm -Uvh" to update the package. This is the method I used and now have KDE 3.1.1 running on my system.

make sure so that you don't have any conflicts that you issue "rpm --rebuilddb" every time you install 5 or more packages at a time. it will help reduce rpm's confusion as to what is installed and what version is installed.
