I currently have every KDE 3.0 rpms on a cdrom. How can I install it if I have Mandrake 8.2 installed with KDE 2.2 ?

Well you can either install from the cdrom, mounting it with the exec option or cp the files to your hard drive after mounting the cd and install from your hard drive ?

mount -o exec /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom ( or whatever directory you mount the cd to when viewing )

There should be instructions that came with it. But, basically, with Mandy 8.2, they really spoon feed you:
Mount the CD
Run rpmdrake
Go to "define sources" and define a new source. The source name can be whatever you want (although I would suggest something like 'KDE 3.0 CD'); and put in the mount point for the CD (i.e. /mnt/cdrom). Don't worry about the 'relative path' thingy, but do make sure that you have the source type set type 'removable media'.

Once you've defined your source, you should then enable it (the first dialog you were given when you clicked 'define sources'); perhaps even disable your current Mandy 8.2 CD/DVD install media.

Wait for the lists to be updated, and then go through and install all the appropriate files. I normally find it more helpful to have them displayed as a flat list rather than separated into lots of menus.

But what should I do if I just want to use KDE 3.0 and I don't want KDE 2.2 at all? If I just install KDE 3.0 rpms with rpmdrake, won't it install KDE 3.0 and also let KDE 2.2 installed on the hard drive? I just want to replace my KDE 2.2 to KDE 3.0.

As it stands, it is not a good idea to completely remove all remnants of KDE 2.2. Although there is a package that allows 2.2-based programs to run under 3.0, I doubt that everything will work OK with it. If I remember correctly (I don't use KDE, so I'm having to think) you can install KDE 3.0 into a separate part of the filesystem, so that the 2.2 libraries are not overwritten.

I believe that in order to completely replace 2.2 with 3.0, you're gonna have to actually remove 2.2 rather than simply upgrade it. You can also do this from rpmdrake, but you'll need to run it from something other than KDE! When you open it up, it'll display 4 'buttons' and 2 'tabs' below them, with 'Installable' and 'Installed' on them respectively. Click on the 'Installed' tab and you should be presented with a nice list (flat list or otherwise) of all the RPM files you have installed to date. Simply check the relevant KDE ones and click on the 'Install/Remove' button. Then you should be able to install the KDE 3.0 RPMS.

Beware, some people have had quite a few problems with KDE 3.0. I strongly suggest that you search this site for previous questions.

I have been working on this idea too!
I alspo have MDK82 and the MDK RPMS ( probably we got the same ones - from the LXF DVD? ) Anyway, I have the MDK82 RPMs on the HD, so I have also added the KDE3 RPMs to the HD also, and using RPMDRAKE simply, grab the lot, and install them.
They are all different to the KDE2 RPMs so nothign will get overwritten or anything, so you can happily install them, and remove them as well if you find that you need/want to.

I have not had total success at getting 3 to autostart like 2, but one thing I have yet to try is that when you update using expert mode from the CD ( on booting ) and you add another window manager, you will get the option of starting X on boot, plus you get a hoice of window manager, and KDE 3 is amont the options then!

I have yet to try that one, and I dont have the time right now ( even though it only takes 2 minutes! )

RedHat 7.3 uses KDE3... That runs fine, but the RPMS for the mandrake install, crash on mine.
Also KDE3 is a hell of a lot faster than KDE2 too! - is it on yours?

Actually, I didn't try to install it yet... I've got the KDE 3 rpms from the LOGIN magazine. The problem is that they are not made for Mandrake; they just seem to be made for no particular distribution. Is that a problem???

I chose every rpm necessary to install KDE 3.0 with rpmdrake, but when I click on the install/remove button, it says that the rpms cannot be found... I copied the rpms on my HD, but it gives me the same error message. What's the problem??? All those rpms ARE in the directory. Should I do it manually, in the shell? If so, how?

It may be the problem. When you look at ftp.kde.org you'll see rpm set for different distros (even for different versions of one distro).

I have done myself a CD of the KDE3 RPMS specifically for Mandrake, they work fine.
Do you want me to post you a copy of the CD?
The only one issue I have with KDE 3 is that it crashes when it comes up with a sigterm 8 I think? ( Using the windows PC right now ) but other than that, its fine, and I think ( I know ) this is down to the system rather than Linux or KDE 3 ( AMD 500 O/C to 672 = hotter than lava, hence funny stuff )

Its not KDE 3 either because RH73 and Conectiva8 both have KDE 3 and they ran fine.

Anyway, Email me directly, and give me an address, and I will slap the MDK RPMS for KDE 3 ( and Source RPMS ) in the post no problems.

Instead of helping, I am gonna chirp in with my problem, since anyone replying to help this guy knows what their doing. I too would like to upgrade to KDE3 but I don't have 2.2 installed at all. I also made a cd with all the rpms on it. But I get a beautiful error thats only 40 lines long and I am missing such files as libasound.so.1, libogg.so.0, libvorbis.so.0, libvorbisenc.so.0, etc. Where can I get these files?

i've done this with rh7.2 - upgraded to kde3. was not fun. good luck. i recommend you try to buy a cheap copy of a distro that comes with kde3+

These are found in the libalsa*, libogg*, libvorb*, etc rpm packages. You can use http://rpmfind.net to search for where these files are included and then find the package on your own install CDs. At least that's what I just did . The indication is that you don't have certain multimedia files loaded or the multimedia package.

Are you using urpmi or rpm or something else? If you are using rpm, then the sequence of loading rpm packages is important. If you are using urpmi, then that will usually resolve dependencies among installing packages very well.
