Installing gtk-gnutella

I got to the "make install" command and it is exiting with permissions errors. Also, when it does install correctly where will it install it to? Maybe it did install it correctly, it just couldn't create this one file it wanted to. Thanks for any help.

No! do NOT use root.!

when you install it just make sure you issue a "su" before you do the make and make install!

I didn't login completely as root, I just did "su" and did my password. Then I ran the command. What should I do with the "unpacked" files or whatever?

just general instructions for installing a package from a tarball (tar.gz):

as normal user:
tar -xzvf tarball.tar.gz
./configure
make

su to root:
make install

then get outta root. you probably won't run into any problems at first if you run the first three steps from root, but from a developer's or an admistrator's standpoint, it's a very bad practice... you can run into serious problems later if you need to debug or reconfigure the programs.

Rule of thumb when installing packages from tarballs:

*Whenever you can aviod it, don't use 'root'.
*Only 'su root' when you get errors like "Error 1"
