Installing from scratch

I am trying to learn to install from source files but have hit a snag. Am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with my system. I am running SuSE V.9.1. Have a gig of ram and an amd64 processor.

I unpacked the source files into their own folder, then opened a terminal and cd'd to the folder where the source files are. Next I typed /configure , but I get the message "bash: /configure: No such file or directory"

Evidently it can't find a file it wants? because I know I am in the directory where the source files are... an help?

I think you want to do "./configure" notice the dot before the slash
