Try newer distributions e.g. Fedora Core 5, Mandriva 2006 or Ubuntu 6.06.

I am using Fedora Core 4 installed on SATA, its running without any issues. But my mother board is VIA K8M800. Try to switch your mode of SATA as IDE from BIOS(My BIOS had that option). After installation boot once in IDE mode and then change the mode SATA. (My BIOS options were IDE or RAID). Not sure about your bios. Hope this helps.

Here's my BIOS info.
-----------------------------------------------------------
BIOS Information
Vendor: Phoenix Technologies, LTD
Version: 6.00 PG
Release Date: 09/30/2004
Address: 0xE0000
Runtime Size: 128 kB
ROM Size: 512 kB
-----------------------------------------------------------

Did you try changing the disk mode?.

By the way, what's the difference between SATA and AHCI in your BIOS option. Because I think SATA and AHCI are the same.(I think so ).

A user should not have a dead wish to force old distros to recognise new hardware. We are into FC6 and Mandrake has long been superseded by Mandriva. They are all freely available. Why keep flogging the dead horse? Listen to the moderator for a change.

Anything you want from the old distros you can get it from the new ones, only better and more efficient.
