Installing binary packages

Hi,

I use Debian Sarge (kernel 2.6.6-1) and want to install a
<program>-bin.tar.gz package

When I decompress the package I only have one executable file but I cannot run it.

Has anybody an idea how to install a binary package?

Thx in advance
Greetz

Maybe a 'chmod u+x file_name' would help?
