Question Installing 7.3 on AMD K6-2 Problem with Gnome/KDE

I'm as new as it gets to Linux, so please excuse the question if it seems to have a simple answer.

Last night I installed Linux 7.3 Server on my AMD box, previously running Win 98. The install went smoothly, but when I tried to log in the desktop (i assuming it was supposed to be a desktop) only slightly appeared and I couldn't do anything. It was a green screen with 1 tab in the upper left corner and a box in the lower right with an (x) on the corner of it. I could get to the shell and run commands but the gui wasn't working (nor my mouse, but that was my own installation goof).

Today, I've tried reinstalling it and changing the installation settings. I've tried installing Gnome and/or KDE and i get the error that the "glibc-common-2.2.5-34-i386.rpm" can not be opened or the package is corrupt.

I downloaded the 3 iso files from a mirror server. I'm wondering if i should also have downloaded the SRPMS files or any other files in order for the install to work.

At the moment, I'm reinstalling exactly as I did last night and plan to add on the Gnome and KDE interfaces to see if that works.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated! THANKS!

Well you should have been a bit patient and be going for RedHat 8.0 which has been released today. You shouldn't really install a GUI if you're going to make the system a server ... just a hint

I've installed 7.3 to mimic the setup at work. I'm working from home and would like my own box to mess around with.

I thought the GUI may be more helpful than command line, esp for a beginner such as myself.

Is it possible to install a GUI on a server or only on a workstation? I did try to install a workstation today, and that bombed as well. I got the same error with the glibc-common rpm.

I'd like to be able to connect to my home network on the pc, and install and run mysql and apache on it. Would a workstation setup be adequate?

Thanks!

The Gui (if you're talking about GNOME or KDE... or another WM) can be installed on any linux as long as X is running and there's enough resources... blah, blah, blah, you get my point.

As far as the terms "workstation" and "server" are concerned, there's a very fine line between what actually seperates them, but generally a server is a box that's "set up" to "serve", whereas a workstation is not. However, a workstation can be running several kinds of server applications, such as apache or mysql server and still be used as and considered a workstation. In the end a linux box is exactly what you make of it. The default installations named "server" and "workstation" in Red Hat merely contain the elements that one might desire for either setup, and do not limit your linux box to one task or the other.
