Installin glib 2.0.1 and Idconfig?

OK~So the root of my problem is I wanted to install mplayer with gui support. But I am having to keep getting more and more dependency programs in order to get it to work. Well I have installed glib and gtk but when I try to ./configure a program that needs one of those it says it does not exist. I read on a board that I may need to do Idconfig if I am installing to a system folder. What is Idconfig and how do I do that? Or is there some other thing I need to do? Thanx
