installer can't read partition table that seems otherwise to be ok

Hi,

When i try to install lunix on my PC that already has WindowsXP on it, i get the message that "the partition table on device hda was unreadable". However, windows boots with no problem and sees all partitions. Also, when booting Knoppix i can see (and mount) all partitions, and fdisk seems to be happy with it too. I tried to "fix" the partition table and mbr with the recovery tool from the windows installation CD, but no luck so far.

I know i can fix it by completely re-installing the drive, but i want to keep the existing partitions, so that will take too much time right now (backup all data). Not to mention that i hate "solutions" like that, i like to understand what is going wrong...

I can't understand why Knoppix and Windows can read the partition table, but the linux installer can't. I tried Fedora Core 5 and Ubuntu, same results. Any ideas or suggestions?

I've succesfully installed linux before on the same drive, so i don't think it's incompatible hardware. Also, hardware failure seems to be out of the question, as windows operates normally (to the extent that windows can operate normally ;-))

Thanks,
Pete

what hardware is hda?

ide or scsi or sata?

2) any raid enabled on the drive?

3) R U using LVM?

The answers may give hints to why the initial ram disk image of the install cd has failed.

btw....you can always boot up knoppix and post the /var/log/dmesg?
