Unhappy installation problem please help !!!!

Hi,

I am trying to install mandrake 10 in a pc which had windows on it. I told the installation to earase all the partitions. the thing is that in the middle of the installation I get an error: mkinitrd failed
I search google and it is related to a kernel problem but what can I do?

I also tried to install FC4 but also the install program ends in the middle wi th en error install exited abnormally.

maybe I have a problem with my HD ? how can I check it?

is there a program to check it? but on the other hand I told the install program of mandrake to format all the partitions and it did so if I had a problem on the HD it should have say so right?

Please help !!!

Thanks,

Juan

Get a Live-cd , make a ext2 fs and run fsck. If everything is OK, then it is not a problem of your HD . Oh, wait. How big is your HD? Maybe it is just too small.

Code:
fsck /dev/hda1
fsck /dev/hda2
Et caetera.

Edit: Hmm, over 300 posts... are you pretending?
Aaaah, read it over again. FC4 . That explains everything. Try debian, there should bo no such prolems.

Uhh.. type slowly. So, as you have noticed (I hope) FC4 is the main source of trouble on LQ, I would avoid it if I were you. Why Debian? Oh, because it is rock=stable , speedy, problemless and relatively easy to install. You could also try Slackware 10.2. Those "User-Friendly installation" distros are afaik useless.
