Install Linux to SATA drive but GRUB2 on to USB thumb drive
Hello LQ community,
I hope you can offer some assistance with this issue. I would like to install Linux (more specifically Ubuntu) to an internal SATA drive. The caveat is that I'd prefer GRUB2 install to a USB thumb drive. This doesn't seem to be an option in the GUI installer. Is there maybe a command line switch to produce the desired results. Thank You for your time, Quija |
In the Allocate Drive Space window on Ubuntu 11, there is an option at the bottom: Device for boot loader installation. Below it, click on the down arrow on the far right to see the options. If you have your flash drive plugged in it should show and you can select it.

Thank You,
I'll test it on a VM before installing on my laptop. Quija |
