Install linux on external HDD (WD myPassport)?

Can I install linux on external HDD (WD myPassport) 300GB? I want to install either Ultimate or lucid lynx Ubuntu, Redhat, openSuse, Slackware or KNOPPIX.

Would it be the 32 bit download if even possible?

Would the external get to hot?

Thanks in advance!

Yes you can install linux on a external drive .
Is a 32 bit be possible yes
Why should it get hot .
But there other consideration to make .
Where did you like to boot from ?
The internal or the external drive
Is the external drive always connected to you're PC ?

Did you make a triple thread for the question ?
If so why is that ?

Hey kinetic.

Currently SuperOS 10.04 (Ubuntu 10.04) is installed on an old 160GB Western Digital of mine and it works great. My current project is trying to get it installed on a new Western Digital 500GB usb 3.0 'my passport' drive but not having much luck with this one (it wont boot). How are you doing on your end? Did you get it to work on your 300GB hdd?

the external drive would get hot if it is heavily used i guess .. but that is normal for harddrives .. they spin at many rpm

have you considered the possibility of your BIOS not recognizing the USB HDD . therefore not booting from it.

Use Plop boot manager to boot from your USB hard drive.

@ bkmfs don't hijack threads . he is not using 3.0usb so the answers might be mixed . Open your thread for this .
