install linux from stock kernel


I want to install linux in a new fresh formatted system. I don't want to goin for the disrto linux. I know how to install a distro linux. I want to identify the packages and install them seperately. How to start? how to compile the stock kernel that i have?

I don't understand what you mean. Please try to speak better english.

I'm guessing you don't want a pre-compiled distribution? One such as Fedora Core? You want one where you choose exactly what packages you want and set up everything?

Read about Gentoo or Linux From Scratch (LFS). Both would be suitable IMO.

Ermm.. don't want to install by means of existing distro's... your only real option would be LFS cause even Gentoo your basically installing their distro, just compiling the packages to suit your hardware architecture and such. LFS is truly installing a distro from scratch.

Gentoo is a long way off a custom-built linux system...

Heh fair point I used it for a while as my second distrobution but the compile times was the catch. If I could get my hands on a dual-SPARC system I might consider trying it again
