Input of Japanese characters

I have been struggling with getting Openoffice in Suse 10.0 to accept input of Japanese characters.

I have selected Japanese as my second language, and made sure all packages and fonts are installed. OO is able to display Japanese characters, but when i press the Kanji button on my keyboard, or hit Shift-Space, it just keeps writing with the current english font.

I have read some threads on this, but they all suggest selecting Japanese as the Primary language. I have tried this, and it works for input as well. But, it turns the whole system into Japanese, and that is not what I want. (hey, I am good in Japanese, but not that good!)

Can any of you guys help?

Cheers!:study:

The package

SCIM

Will do this job.

Have a look here:

http://www.scim-im.org/

What distrobution are you using?

If it is debian based there are deb packages avaliable.

Make sure you read the instructions carefully, I had trouble getting it fully functional in mandriva!

Thanks for your input!

I found out I already have SCIM installed, but when I try to run it by typing `SCIM` from the command prompt, I get this:

Smart Common Input Method 1.4.1

Launching a SCIM process with x11...
Loading socket Config module ...
Creating backend ...
Loading x11 FrontEnd module ...
SCIM has exited abnormally.

Have you ever come across this?

I am running SUSE 10.0 if it is any help

Mmmmmmmm

Scratches head

try:

scim -v

to give a verbose output and post it here

also

I used to use SUSE and it worked fine then. You may also want to search the package management system to see if there are any dependent packages that have been missed using the website above as a guide.

Also, uninstall and reinstall the package, this may work
