Inittab - stopping processes upon boot

Hello All:

I'm trying to get rid of unneeded processes running on my old laptop.
I've already stopped about half of them from comming up on system start,
but am wondering two things: what the ones are below (in bold), and how to keep them
from initializing on start up as well, if they're not needed:

$ ps -ef (command only)
CMD
init
[keventd]
[kapm-idled]
[ksoftirqd_CPU0]
[kswapd]
[kreclaimd]
[bdflush]
[kupdated]
[mdrecoveryd]
minilog
/usr/sbin/apmd -p 10 -w 5 -W -P
gpm -t ps/2 -m /dev/mouse
login
/sbin/mingetty tty2
/sbin/mingetty tty3
/sbin/mingetty tty4
/sbin/mingetty tty5
/sbin/mingetty tty6
-bash
ps -ef

Running RedHat 7.2.

1-5+7 are kernel services
bdflush is responsible for memory and swap
mdrecoveryd is unknown to me.

Thanks mirkokl.

I guess I'll be looking at the kernel src to see if I need these or not. Although it may not be worth it to recompile the kernel. With the processes running as stated above (which I believe are fairly minimal), when you only have 20 megs of ram and a 50 MHz processor, CPU idle is still about 93, but I'd like to get that to 98-99.

Any other Suggestions?

i don't think you'll be able to get rid of any of those processes. Go and look for services rather

Noerr:

The ps -ef output that I showed was the complete list of processes running on the machine from boot.

Did you have something else in mind?

No, he didn't, but you oughtn't erase parts of the kernel - I suppose thy'll have a reason for existence.
