init help

Error:

init: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, it just repeats. Did a google, came up w/ not much other than trying to comment out 1: in inittab which is mingetty? No Idea what this is. Need to get this back up asap as it it my mail server. On boot it hangs at "Linuxconf: running Linuxconf Hooks (Succeeded)" At this point it fails to boot and just sits there.. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

sounds like you messed with linuxconf (first mistake, you should be using webmin).

in linuxconf you (or someone) set something on- which should not be on (like isdn, or some other oddity that will/can freeze your puter when trying to activate).

i'm not saying webmin is perfect in this particulare area (i'v seen it done when disabling shorewall... and the bastard wouldn't allow me to get into my own sys after that!).

anyway i don't know enuff from here to help other than say the quickist way would be to bring out the backups, unless you know how to edit your configs from a live cd or seperate hd install.

good luck
