Independent sound channels?

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to setup debian so that each app's volume control only affects its own volume level?

At the moment, when i turn the volume in XMMS down, the volume for every other app gets turned down with it. Same goes for mplayer/xine.

How would i go about setting this up? :scratch:

i think there may be a way to do it in xmms, look in its preferences.
i cant be sure because im at school using a windows machine.

ok
I'd had a look in there. Under [Audio i/o plugins]/[output plugin]/[oss driver 1.2.7] -> configure;

There's an option to use an alternate audio device. Is this what i'm after? I've tried pointing this to /dev/dsp1, but got silence. Also tried /dev/audio and dev/audio1, but i get the original behaviour using those two.

I'm using a soundblaster live if that's any help

in the oss configuration page go to the mixer tab and tick [volume controls master not pcm]. when i got home and checked i realised it probably wont solve your problem but here it is anyway,
good luck
