Incorrectly sized fonts on WindowMaker startup

Currently running Slack 11.0 on my Latitude D610 laptop. I choose to boot into runlevel 3 (meaning I'm not starting WindowMaker from xdm, gdm, or kdm). When I first boot X and WM via "startx", any applications using the GNOME-based libraries have fonts that are way larger than they should be. If I then launch the GNOME Control Center and just double-click on "Font", the now-too-large fonts suddenly correct themselves (incidentally before the Fonts window appears). Any GNOME-based application that I open up after this "fix" appears correct, too.

Right now I simply have gnome-control-center set to open automatically when the WM desktop fires up, so it isn't a terrible workaround. But I was wondering if there is anyone out there who might know how I could fix this in a more permanent way.

Just for thoroughness, if I kill my X session and restart it (and WM), I have to go through the process all over again.
