redhat 5.2 on a ibm 300 mhz with 64 megs of ram in 1998. an 8 gb hdd with a zip drive i installed. it used lilo as the boot loader. it detected everything but i was on dial-up so it couldn't get on the web, but i had a lot of fun. i bought the distro at costco. i think it was 50 dollars. the good old days.
2010-2011.I started with ubuntu 9.10.Tried Debian ,fedora and finally started using Linux Mint13,then Linux Mint14...... .Now my OS is Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64 bits.
Irrespective of whether its free or non free,Linux Mint is the most satisfactory and I will continue to use it.
I am a Home User.Linux Mint fulfills all my rquirments except
1)Excel 97 and Excel 2000 had Lotus key Transitin Menu,Which Libre Office (and Excel 2007,Excel 2010) does not have.
2)Video files *.dat can not be viewed or CD with Video files *.dat can not be copied.

I was fortunate enough to have a coworker in 1993 who introduced me to Linux. Started running SLS with kernel 0.99pl12, but it didn't recognize my SCSI card so I had to download a new batch of install disks from a cutting-edge distro known as Slackware. Used Linux off and on ever since.
In 1998, Hungary in Windows XP was very expensive and annoying crashes constantly had to save and restore it. Or I used DOS 6.1 and aTurbo Basic and more. Many a time I had learned with Linux - more than I've been working on the program.
The first semi-official LQ Poll, What Was Your First Linux Distro? now has almost 500 votes and based on feedback in this thread, the idea of regular polls seems popular. Based on that, here's the next poll in the series; In What Year Did You Start Using Linux?
--jeremy
You have to add another year.! I juststarted this year !!
I voted 06-07, although I had tried it a few times prior (I just worked it out and I'm pretty sure it was 2005), but 2007 that was the year that I actually used it!
[I just edited/updated this post because while answer the poll on first distro I reflected on it and got some clearer recollections...]
